AHMED BANDERKER
CA (SA)
Group Chief Executive Officer
Ahmed Banderker is a qualified chartered accountant – he completed his articles at Fisher Hoffman PKF. He started his career at Sail Group Ltd as Finance Manager. He then joined Shell in 2003 where he fulfilled various roles within this company and culminated in him leading a diverse team across different countries. In addition, he was also appointed as a Board member and shareholder representative in Shell’s subsidiary companies in South Africa.
Ahmed was appointed to the Sanlam Group in November 2006 as Head of Finance at Glacier before taking on the role of Chief Executive: Strategic Business Development in 2011.
Banderker joined the AfroCentric Group Board in December 2015 where he has served as a member of Remuneration Committee, Nomination Committee and Investment Committee. In April 2019, he was appointed to serve as the Group CEO.

HANNES BOONZAAIER
CA(SA)
Group Chief Financial Officer
After qualifying as a CA, Hannes joined a corporate finance team at KPMG, where he gained valuable experience in due diligences, valuations and commercial structuring of companies. He joined Medscheme 15 years ago as a financial manager upon which he progressed to manage various client business units involved in scheme finance, broker commission and claims processing. Shortly after the listing of the Group in 2009, he headed up the Group Finance unit which has since expanded due to the group diversification and changes in shareholding structures. As a result of his extensive knowledge of the business, he was appointed AfroCentric Group CFO in August 2015.

AKLAAQ MAHMOOD

Director - Group Diversified and Africa
Aklaaq Mahmood has more than 18 years’ experience in the healthcare industry. Formerly, he was the Deputy CEO of LA Health Medical Scheme and Principal Officer of ProSano Medical Scheme. An MBA graduate from the University of Stellenbosch where he received a highest achievement Merit Award for Strategy. Aklaaq began his career in healthcare serving as a trustee on the Board, Audit Committee and Pension Fund of Global Health Medical Scheme. He has also been a member of various other committees and forums, including Chairperson of the Audit Committee, Risk Committee and Mayoral Performance Evaluation Panel for the City of Cape Town. Aklaaq Mahmood is the director for AfroCentric Group’s Business Development and chairperson of Medscheme Namibia. He is a director for a number of AfroCentric Group subsidiaries. Further responsibilities include the integration of new acquisitions into the Group.

JOHAN VAN ROOYEN

Chief Operating Officer – Medscheme Holdings
Johan spent 22 years within the Discovery Group, starting in 1996 as Head of Provider Networks and Relations.
In 2000 he was appointed Head of Vitality, reporting to Group Marketing Director. He was involved with the launch of Vitality and transformed Vitality into an “intuitive, integrated and real-time Service”.
In 2003, he was appointed to Head of Group Service reporting to the Discovery Health Chief Executive Officer. He drove the business transformation by implementing the Discovery Service Model and serviced Discovery’s USA and UK health insurance and Vitality from Johannesburg. In 2005, Johan assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer, specializing in large scale transformation programs, designing and implementing the innovative “Discovery Science of Service” model of service operations management.
In 2010, Johan was appointed as General Manager, Ping An Health, Shanghai, PRC. Discovery owns a share in Ping An Health (a specialist health insurer). Johan was the Discovery appointed head of mission at the start of this venture and reported to the Chairman and CEO, Lu Min. He completed 2 of 3 years of his fixed contract, transferring Discovery’s health insurance IP and launching Vitality in China. He assisted with the establishment of AIA Vitality.
In 2012, Johan assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer, AIA Health Hong Kong. AIA Vitality was a joint venture between Discovery and AIA, created for the purpose of establishing Discovery’s Vitality program in AIA’s markets in Asia Pacific. Johan established this venture, building Vitality in 7 countries (Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines and Korea). At the end of the 3 year contract he left to be part of Discovery Bank venture.
In 2015, Johan was appointed Chief Design Officer of the Discovery Bank Project. He was a founding member of Discovery Bank. He designed almost all aspects of the digital and in particular, its service model and processes, reporting to Chief Executive Officer, and was a member of the Executive Committee of the bank.
Johan left the Discovery Group in 2018 to join Kaelo Group as Chief Executive Officer, while investigating various ventures and working on one specifically (an ethical, digital micro lender). He was approached by one of the co-founders to invest and lead in this SME to corporate status and prepare for a listing.
In June 2020, Johan was appointed as Chief Operating Officer of Medscheme Holdings Pty Ltd.

GAWIE ERASMUS

CEO: AfroCentric Pharma Cluster
Gawie Erasmus is a qualified Chartered Accountant - he completed his articles and started his career as Audit Manager with KPMG. He joined Bytes Technologies in 2000 as Financial Manager, where he also fulfilled various operational roles, leading multi-disciplinary teams. In 2007 he was appointed as Chief Operations Officer at SilverBridge Holdings where he gained experience in optimizing value from technology and leading international operations.
Gawie joined Activo Health as CEO in 2014, and Pharmacy Direct in 2016 and was responsible for optimizing the value chain between Activo Health, Curasana Wholesaler and Pharmacy Direct. He was appointed CEO of AfroCentric Pharma Cluster in 2020.

TOBIE DU PREEZ

CEO: Afrocentric Distribution Services
Tobie du Preez holds a national higher diploma in marketing and has a passion for business development, sales and strategic marketing. He prides himself of achieving tangible results throughout his career, excelling on all levels while driving innovation. He has an inherent understanding consumer needs, analysing market trends to proactively exceed expectations. He has a passion to translate consumer needs into innovative product solutions and has successfully driven sales models to provide best results. His exceptional negotiation and presentation skills has served him in good stead to drive conversion of member profiles, through directing sales efforts to desired target markets.

TEBOGO MAKOE
MA, EMBA
Group Executive: Human Capital and Transformation
Tebogo Makoe is a seasoned senior executive with over 20 years’ experience and leadership across all HR value chain functions, specialist roles, Centre of Expertise (CoEs) and strategic development and management of implementation.
Before joining the AfroCentric Group, she was HR vice-president at Sasol.
Tebogo studied at the University of Cape Town, where she has completed her Executive MBA, Strategic Human Resources and Bachelor of Social Science degrees. Other programmes that Tebogo has completed include her MA at the Witwatersrand University, the Breakthrough Programme for Senior Executives at IMD Lausanne Campus, Switzerland and Leadership and Organisational Renewal at Harvard Business School Boston Campus in the US.

FEZEKA NOMPUMZA

Managing Executive – Clinical Risk and Advisory
Fezeka Nompumza has over 20 years' experience as a professional, manager, executive and leader in financial services and managed care industry.
Fezeka joins the AfroCentric Group from Concor Construction (previously Murray & Roberts Construction), where she held several positions including Senior Executive: Business Development and Stakeholder Engagement, Project Development Executive and Strategic Planning Executive/Manager in the Office of the CEO.

SANDILE MBELE
MBA, BTech & Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management
Executive: Corporate Solutions
Sandile Mbele holds a BTech: Chemical Engineering, Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and an MBA. He has more than 15 years of experience in healthcare and joins the AfroCentric Group from Africa Healthcare. Prior to this, Sandile held various leadership roles at Netcare.

DR MIKE MARSHALL

Executive Manager: Research & Product Development
Dr Mike Marshall graduated with an MBChB from the University of Cape Town in 1989. He spent a number of years practising clinical medicine the public and private sector both locally and overseas.
He joined Medscheme in 2005 as a senior manager in the hospital benefit management department. Since then, Mike has been involved in a number of roles at a general manager level within Medscheme. These include healthcare professional relations and contracting, business development, disease management and general manager of AfA. He is currently responsible for research and product development in health risk management.

AVSHARN BACHOO

Avsharn Bachoo is a technology strategist with over two decades of experience as a chief information officer and chief technology officer. He holds a PhD in systems architecture from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Master's in information systems from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Bachelor of Science Honours at Unisa and a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Natal.
